Daniela Trezzi, 34 had been working on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis in the intensive care unit of San Gerardo Hospital, in Lombard, the worst affected Italian region.

The National Federation of Nurses of Italy confirmed her tragic death and said that the healthworker had been under a lot of stress.

And her emotional state reportedly worsened when she was diagnosed with the killer bug on March 10 and according to the FNOPI told colleagues “she lived a heavy stress for the fear of having infected others”.

In a statement, the federation said: “We express our pain and consternation over the suicide of our young colleague.

“Our 450,000 professionals will join together around the relatives and family of Daniela.”

And they warned that another nurse had died a few days ago in Venice, adding: “We are at risk of suffering stressful conditions and worker shortages, but this cannot be commented on now.”

Mario Aparone, the Director of the San Gerardo Hospital, said he regretted the nurse’s death and that “judicial authorities are investigating the case”.

Italy is currently the worst hit nation with more than 6,820 deaths and almost 70,000 confirmed patients, and has surpassed China where over 3,200 people have died.

The country has been under prolonged lockdown as it tries to stop the spread of infections from the worst-hit northern region of Lombardy.

On March 12, public gatherings were banned and most businesses shut down in a bid to halt the spreading of the virus.

Now the lockdown has been extended, which Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said has helped prevent “the collapse of the system”.

It comes as coronavirus globally has been spreading rapidly across the world, claiming more than 16,000 lives.
